                      Vancouver Island Adventure 2017

We got on the ferry in Anacortes,  WA.  It is on a little island called Fidalgo Island.  It was such a pretty little town.  I was amazed at all the flowering trees and amazing daffodils in ditches everywhere.
Bridge from Washington to Fidalgo Island
This is right beside the RV park where we stayed the night before we crossed.
                                                              Getting on the Ferry

It was a cold and dreary day but I had dressed with ski jacket and ear muffs and gloves so was able to stay out on the open deck for a lot of the trip.
The scenery was amazing and we saw a group of seals playing along beside the ferry.
It was interesting to watch them stop and drop people off at Friday Harbour

The ferry dropped us off in Sidney, BC and we then drove to the resort which is half way between Campbell River and Courtenay
This is the entrance to Salmon Point resort where our friends Rick and Janet have a park model.  They managed to score us a spot right in the next street from them.   It is a beautiful well cared for resort.
We can see the ocean from our front window and it is a very short walk to the beach.  It is a rocky beach as opposed to sandy but very pretty.
There is a nice restaurant and a marina as well.
They took us out to this old pub that still has Ladies and Gent separate entrance.  It has not been updated in a long while and was a fun experience.

I am recapping the first week as I have left the blogging too long and my memory is really bad.  The weather was pretty cold and wet the first couple of weeks so we took advantage of blue sky days to get out and explore.  The top 2 pictures are of Elk Falls Provincial park.  The long pipes are actually how the water is pumped from reservoir to the power plant.  Believe it or not they are made of wood.  They are re-doing this whole operation and most of it will be underground when it is finished.
We walked over a suspension bridge (well some of us did anyway) and were rewarded with views of the beautiful falls.
I had been watching these huge bright flowers all along on our trip from  Oregon to BC and finally was able to see one up close.  They are called skunk cabbage and you can smell why when you get close.

I was super excited to see this trumpeter swan.  Apparently 10,000 trumpeter swans winter along the southwest coast of BC

All of these pictures are taken off of a nature path that goes for about 3 -4 km from right beside the resort to the river close to the old pub.  It is amazing as there is ocean on one side and mountains with pastures, farm land on the other.
This is the opening to the ocean from the marina at low tide.  See how the constant tide has brought in all the sand?  They have to dredge it twice a year.
We even got a fishing experience in.  Rick took us out on his boat and they fished while I did my usual goofing off.

I got to help bring this guy in but, as much as I hate to admit it, I really don't like touching fish.
The ocean is a constant wonder to me, I did not know about the high tides and low tides and just how fast it can become very dangerous.  It is a wonder and something to be respected.
There are all kinds of crab shells on the beach here.  The birds get some pretty nice food!
This little girl was out fishing as well.
