Vancouver Island Part 2
This is basically a record of the things we did from April 21 to 23Harlequin ducks, I have not got a great photo of them yet. They like to go to far out from shore to get a great shot. They are beautiful little birds.
I loved watching the cormorants right from the beach in Campbell River. It is a great area to walk around and see the ocean. There is a museum close by which gave us an idea of the culture and industry in the area. We went with Rick and Janet on a Wednesday as it was free and they had never been there before either. Don and I went to the maritime museum a couple of days later and learned a lot more about the fishing industry in the area.
First of all, I have been seeing so many different birds that I have never seen before. Birds we don't have on the prairies and birds that we do but only when breeding. It is super interesting to see the grebes and loons in different plumage than I am used to. I have started recording my birds on ebird and between Arizona and BC for just 2017 I am up to 92 different species. So, when I see a different one it is pretty exciting.
This is from the Dick Murphy Park on the Tyee Spit. It is really quire close by and has a great area to walk around and a lot of birds and pretty flowers. Definately a place worth coming back to before we leave the island.
I cannot resist taking pictures of mushrooms. This was at Oyster Bay which is a great area to bird watch when the tide is out.
Janet had a baby shower to go to at Qualicum beach, it was at the golf course Sunday brunch so I was lucky enough to be able to tag along. She took me to the beach there and we walked around at the Heritage Forest before the shower started. After lunch she took me to MacMillan Provincial Park where we went to cathedral grove and looked at trees 800 years old. Amazing to think about these trees living so long. Some of the douglas fir managed to live that long as their bark is so thick that it can withstand forest fires.
the scale of the huge trees and tiny little mushrooms all living in the same area is such an amazing thing
The forest was so wet and muddy and I know it was the supreme sacrifice for Janet to show me these things as she does not enjoy walks in the woods.
The last place we stopped before we headed home was in Coombs. This is a cute little tourist area with all kinds of little shops. This is called goats on the roof and it usually has goats on the roof (duh) but the babies are too young yet apparently. The inside is huge, there are foods of all kinds and all ethnic groups as well as a restaurant.
